The Situation

StrongRoom AI is a medical technology company building software to reduce adverse drug reactions in aged care. In early 2022, the company was building StrongCare, a medication management product for aged care facilities that hadn't launched yet.

Aged care providers were dealing with staffing shortages, complex compliance requirements and inconsistent stock control. StrongCare needed to solve all three through two core features, an Electronic Controlled Drug Register (eCDR) and an Electronic National Residential Medication Chart (eNRMC).

The Task

William joined StrongRoom AI in early 2022, shortly after completing a double degree in UX Design and Business Management at Swinburne University, to lead UX and UI design for StrongCare. His brief was to design a product that simplified complex medication workflows, met strict compliance requirements and stayed usable for clinicians with limited technical skills. His role grew from there into leading the product roadmap, managing a cross-functional team and setting the product's overall direction.

Research & Initial Design

Conducted user interviews and on-site observations with nurses, pharmacists and aged care staff
Shadowed medication rounds to understand real-world workflow and compliance challenges
Collaborated with clinical advisors to simplify product workflows

Developed low and high-fidelity prototypes in Figma

Company Design System & Product Iteration

Led the creation of StrongRoom's cross-product design system in Figma
Defined and documented component behaviours, patterns and usage guidelines
Standardised visual language, typography, spacing and interaction styles
Collaborated with developers to implement reusable components in code
Audited legacy screens and updated them to align with new design standards
Trained other designers and developers on how to apply the design system effectively
Refined core workflows based on insights from pilot users across aged care sites
Introduced UI enhancements for better usability on tablets used in clinical settings

Product Growth & Leadership

Promoted to Product Designer for StrongCare, overseeing strategy and execution
Defined and managed the product roadmap aligned with business and user goals
Facilitated fortnightly sprint planning and backlog management with the Tech Team
